I'm glad to have the opportunity to meet the son (and daughter as well) of Anakin Skywalker. It's so strange to meet you now, so many years removed from our natural timelines, but I'm grateful it's happened.

You began it. And set the example I hoped to aspire to. Meeting you was the first step to my destiny.

I'm sorry if I seem shocked by this news. You are a very powerful Jedi. It's incredible for me to learn I had a part in your training. I'm pleased to learn I was able to help you in part to become what you are now.

I'm not sure you would say that if you knew more. I'm afraid I haven't lived up to your example as well as I'd like.

I can sense that you're a strong and powerful Jedi Knight, that you have nothing but good in you. I'm sure whatever trouble you saw, it was not for lack of care or trying.

Caring isn't always enough. And perhaps caring was part of my failure.

[okenobi]

It is a difficult line we are forced to walk. The bond between master and apprentice is necessarily strong. When we are training, as the Padawan or the Master, it takes great lengths to learn how to separate ourselves from the depth of our feelings. I myself have never been entirely successful. I credit my master with the control he always maintained to assist in balancing my own.

I never questioned this life, being a Jedi, training to be a knight. But our personal sacrifice is a great one. I'm glad to make it, but I don't believe we should be punished for maintaining our humanity.

I fear I let affection for my student cloud my judgment. When he turned... [Well, were you an older, more experienced Obi-Wan, it would be a different conversation.]

Do you have those concerns?

[okenobi]

My master was killed just as I was brought here. As he died in my arms he made me promise to train your father. It was his dying wish and I could not refuse, not with how deeply I cared for him. My training was all but complete, but he would have seen me through the Trials, and even if I am returned to my timeline, the final rituals of my Knighthood will be tarnished by Qui-Gon's absence and my grief for him.

I know that I keep my promise, but as I am, here and now, I don't know how I found the strength to train Anakin. The circumstances involved put incredible risk on my being able to properly train him, and him being receptive to that training. Fear, as you know, can be unfathomably dangerous. And I am terrified.

I know that fear, far too well, I think. But your teachings have never failed me.

I'm relieved to hear it. And I feel proud I was able to carry on the tradition of teaching my master passed to me.

Between you and Master Yoda, I can't imagine having better mentors.

You trained with Master Yoda?

I can see now how you've become so strong.

It was certainly a humbling experience.

He's far more intimidating than his appearance leads you to believe. And more powerful.

I found that out the hard way. More than once.

I met him for the first time when I was very young. I was told to be respectful to all of the members of the Council, but I was nervous and though I kept a serious face, in my mind I thought he was funny to look at. The talking to I got from him that day was not something I will ever forget.

Which is probably why you failed to mention what he looked like to me when you sent me to him.

It was definitely a formative memory for me. I'm glad my future self saw fit to share that with you.

At the time, thanking you was the last thing on my mind. I think Master Yoda felt much the same. He tried to turn me away.

I can't imagine Master Yoda turning anyone away. Something very dire must have happened. I'm not so sure I should ask what that might have been.

There was a Jedi that turned to the Dark Side. He nearly destroyed the Jedi. I think Master Yoda's reaction was partially to teach me a lesson, and partially from worry that the same might happen to me. I was quite a bit older than most Jedi apprentices were when they started the training.

Your father. Master Yoda could see your father in you, starting your training late, having me as your teacher. He had every right to worry.

I can't believe I didn't sense it before. Anakin turned. Why didn't you tell me?
