The two aren't so different as you might think.

The Skywalker I know made mistakes with his students as well. He closed his academy rather than continue, then set on his own path alone, helping when the New Republic needed him. He used that time to further his understanding of the Force.

There's the sacrifice every Jedi makes. I'm not ready to make that sacrifice.

It's different for everyone, you told me. Something every student has to face, or overcome, before becoming a Jedi. You told me yours was facing Vader, that you misunderstood Yoda, and thought it meant you had to kill him or he would kill you.

I don't fear it. I'm just not ready to declare myself ready to serve the Galaxy.
