Apologies if I can't seem to find your sense of humor about it. Which should honestly come as no surprise.

It doesn't. But it's more I was dead. I'm not now. It's a pretty big distinction.

Yes, a pretty big distinction. The more important distinction being what you are if you aren't dead. I don't mean to be aweless, but to my knowledge, it's one thing that's usually permanent.

"Usually" being the operative word. I don't know what I am either, other than older than I was supposed to get to be.

Why are you apologizing?

I would think if anyone knows how much I have to apologize for, it would be you.

For lying and keeping so much from you. For not being fast enough to kill him. For not trying to do so sooner. For... well, lots of things. There's a whole long list, but I won't bore you with the rest.

Regardless of what everyone seems to think, Eden, my life has always been in my own hands. It's just that I realized a little too late a terrible thing: that means that I have no one to blame but myself. For everything.

[ his expression shifts to tentatively wistful ]

I had reasons, you know. I wasn't trying to hurt you.

Believe me, I know. Well, at any rate I have some perspective.

And besides, of the two of us, I've proven infinitely more malicious. How could I find fault when you're right in front of me?

I'd say very easily, but I prefer it if you don't.

I have trouble imagining you being deliberately cruel, though. I guess neither of us have the whole story.
