Admittedly, the circumstances are a bit... complicated. But most things are around here.

Complicated how, then? Since you're a friend of my sister's, I hope you'll indulge me.

Complicated only because we met here in Darrow. There is a good chance that you have not spoken to Sybil since the two of us met, even if you saw her only moments ago. Time works differently here.

*rueful* It’s a lot to take in, I know. Sybil will be glad to see you, though. She speaks often of her family.

Wait, you're talking about Sybil, too? I thought you must have meant--

It wasn't only moments ago that I last saw her. It's been a long time, in fact. And I don't know if you and that other man have planned this, or why, but honestly, I'm begging you, don't do this. It's just too much.

'Pleasant' isn't the word I'd use to describe any of this, though I will say that it helps to see a familiar face. Do you have the first idea what's going on here?

The first idea, perhaps, but not much more than that. I've been here a year, come February, but if you're looking for an explanation, I can't say I've got a better one than I had last spring.

At this point, I'll take whatever explanation you've got. No one's told me much of anything yet, except some rather startling stories.

We've all been trapped here by someone, or something, with a very poor sense of humor, from what I gather. We're made to live out our lives, or some parody of them, with no knowledge of why we're here, or how long we're meant to stay. It's all quite maddening.

You've spoken to someone who know Lady Sybil, haven't you?

...Two people who claimed to, yes. Why? Have you heard the same?

Of course it's me. You've no idea how glad I am of you here, it's been forever and then thomas appeared, the footman, you know him and I've been desperately hoping that you and Edith would come too.

How can you say 'of course'? There's no of course about it when--

[She cuts herself off, voice wavering, but can't bring herself to say it. Instead, she crosses to and embraces her sister, as if needing to prove that she really is there.]

Oh, darling Sybil, I've missed you, too.

[She wraps her arms about her sister, somewhat surprised by the show of affection but in no way displeased]

You must tell me all about Downton, of course. Everyone says that even when we are here we are also still at home, but it's been almost two years now since I've had much news. Mama, is she well? And Cousin Matthew? Has he returned from the war safely?

[It takes everything she has in her not to crumple at that last question, but she manages, only just barely holding on to her composure. Difficult as it might be, this isn't the time to fall apart.]

I...think two years for you has been considerably longer than that for me. The war's been over for almost four years now. As for Downton -- well, for starters, Thomas the footman isn't a footman anymore, he's the under butler. Mama is quite well, though there was a scare a while back, just after the war. And Matthew...

He did return from the war safely, yes. They thought he'd severed his spinal cord, but that turned out to be a mistake. Though that was a long time ago now, too.
