Harry Potter

Harry Potter comes from the end of the first book as he's about to head "home" for the summer holiday. He does not have his Darrow memories.

I thought you'd be older.

*Pushes his hair back to reveal his scar, rather used to this by now*

I am.

And I'm sorry? I wish I was older, most days.

*Melanie shakes her head, more at herself than him. She knows Darrow can be weird about time. Of course, explaining herself would mean telling him he's been here before, and maybe she shouldn't do that. It would just be confusing, if he doesn't already remember. She considers how best to proceed for a few moments.*

I've just heard a lot about you. From your dad, mostly.

My dad? But how?

My dad's dead. Both my parents are.

*That is an unpleasant bit of news, and Melanie frowns for a moment before brushing the worry aside. She can ask James about it later, maybe.*

He's not dead here. I live with him and Newt Scamander. They've been using their magic to keep me safe.

*Harry is so confused. Is this another of the Dursley's tricks? But how could it be, with magic involved? Perhaps this is a surprise exam he still has to finish.*

Newt Scamander, the author of my school text?

Keep you safe? Is someone trying to hurt you?

Maybe. I don't know if he's written any textbooks. *Has he been holding out on her? She knows she doesn't have magic, but still.*

... No. *It sounds more thoughtful than reassuring, as if there's an implicit 'not yet.'* It's more that I might hurt people. But I'm much better now than I was when I first arrived.

I can't imagine there's too many people with that name.

...Are you okay? *Now Harry is definitely concerned for Melanie*

*Melanie grins fleetingly.* That's true. It's a good name, though. *She feels compelled to defend it in case Harry's teasing. Besides, she likes Newt's name. It's fun to say, and it sounds like something out of a very good story.*

I'm fine. I've got... it's like an illness. I can handle it all right, but if I gave it to anyone else, it'd kill them. Sort of. It's safe to talk to me, though. You won't catch it just by standing close or anything.

[who_lived]

It is. *Harry nods grinning cautiously in return* It makes me think of the animals. Seems fitting for someone who writes about magical creatures. I suspect he and Hagrid would really get on.

*He frowns at her description of her illness, even more worried for her.*

Is it something I can help with? I've got magic, you know.

Dad? But I don't...I don't understand.

Harry, I'm so proud of you. [moves to wrap his arms around him, probably too tight] You look so much like your mother.

[Harry tenses, unused to being hugged by anyone, let alone his dad who is supposed to be dead. He wonders if this is some trick, if Voldemort's found a way to make him see things. Or maybe this is some extra school test, one he hasn't yet passed.

But after another moment, he decides he doesn't care. He returns the hug, clinging himself.]

Really? They always tell me I look like you.

[He glances up to look at James.] So if you're here and I come here does that mean I don't have to go back to the Durseleys this summer?

That's the hair, I'm afraid.

[he smiles, but there's a tinge of sadness to it] I'm here. If you stay, I have a cottage for us. But Harry, that's... That's not always up to us.

[who_lived]

I think it's also because I tend to get into trouble wherever I go, too.

[Harry frowns, and he clings, just a little tighter.]

I don't want to go back, now that I know you're here and alive. Is mum here too?

[can't help but grin at that, but it fades at the question]

She was, but she had to go. Trust me Harry, I want you to stay too. More than anything.

Did she...

[Harry hesitates, not wanting to ask the question on the tip of his tongue, but finding himself unable to keep from doing so.]

Did she go back home?

[To being dead, he adds in his head.]

Somewhere better, I hope.

Harry? [without waiting for confirmation she wraps her arms around him in a hug]

...Mum?

[He doesn't think either, he just clings.]

But Dad told me you weren't here.

[chasinglily]

[gently, she pets the top of his head. her baby is so grown up and she's trying to not cry.]

Well I'm not strictly here yet. But don't worry. We'll be a proper family soon, I promise Harry. Mummy's always here.

[It's so strange to him, all this affection when he's so used to the lack of it. He buries his head against her, trying not to cry himself.]

I miss you and Dad all the time.

[that breaks her heart to hear. all she wants is for him to be safe and happy]

I know. We miss you too. We wish it didn't have to be this way.
