Stranger Things

[Eleven is sitting on the ground, three Eggo waffle boxes next to her, one in her lap. Mid-bite she stops and looks around, confused]

[scrambles backwards at the sudden appearance of the strange man, clutching the half-eaten waffle and the box to her chest. She ducks behind a large nearby tree and tries to figure out where she is, where she can run and hide]

Hey, whoa, sorry. Easy. I'm not gonna take 'em, promise. [He holds his hands up and offers a little smile, then slowly sits down on the ground. Less intimidating, right?] You don't have to run away.

[wafflemage]

[She peeks out, looking the man over. He isn't one of Them, but if they find her they will kill him.]

[softly] Bad men.

Promise I'm not one of them. And I wouldn't let anyone hurt you, kiddo. I didn't mean to scare you.

[potatoestomatoes]

I didn't know they had waffles in this deli!

[wafflemage]

[startles and gets up, backing away a few steps warily, her half-eaten waffle still in hand]

Aw, c'mon. I won't steal 'em.

[wafflemage]

[just stares at him. He's so big, he could be one of Them but he isn't acting like it.]

Sorry. It's just that I lost my sandwich.

[scrambles up and drops the box, backing away a few steps. She looks around, not recognizing any of it, and then looks back to the strange man, silent and staring]

Woah now, I'm not gonna bite! Not anything other than a waffle at least, and only if you're offering.

I'm just wondering if you need any help.

[Daine watches the girl for a minute or so, well-hidden in the underbrush. Something about the way she eats, and the alert way she holds herself, reminds her - uncomfortably - of how she must have looked when she'd gone mad and ran with the Pack. There's no spark of wild magic about this one, but best be careful, anyway. At least her current shape isn't very threatening.

Daine lets out a soft, trilling chirp, then takes a cautious step out into the open. See? Nice kitty.]

[wafflemage]

[Eleven stops chewing when she sees the cat. Her thoughts remember when they wanted her to kill the other. No. She won't. This is a different cat. The forest is gone and she's somewhere else. Slowly, she sets down the box and the waffle and holds her hand out to touch the cat, if it wants.]

[At least she hasn't scared the girl. Most young folk like her magic, but this one still looks like she might bolt like a startled deer. Best keep playing the part of a nice cat, at least until she has a better idea of what's going on. Daine steps forward and gently butts her head against the girl's hand, purring encouragingly.

Is this girl lost, too? There's something else they'd have in common. Daine lets out another chirp, this one going up at the end, like a question.]

[The hand holding onto the waffle slowly lowers as Eleven stares up at the woman who looks just like her. Is she from that place? An adult who has to go in the tank? Can she make the bad guys' bones snap? Eleven gets to her feet and tentatively comes a little closer. She holds up her arm, the one with her name. 011.]

[She frowns when she sees the number.]

Did someone do that to you? Let me see.

[She holds out her organic hand; sometimes the mechanical one scared kids. It's just a number, nothing else. Was she one of eleven? One of more? More what?]

[Laurent watched the girl's attack on the snowflakes made of dough. At length he approached, his quiet steps lost to the rustle of the box in her lap.]

They are pleasing, I take it?

[wafflemage]

[The man talks in such a strange way she has never heard before, that Eleven forgets to run from him at first. Adults bring the other adults, the ones who hurt her. She remembers Benny and stops eating, getting unsteadily to her feet. She shakes her head and backs away.]

Not so, then.

[Laurent retrieves the box she has abandoned, pulling from within it a half thawed piece of what must have been meant to be pastry. He does not miss the opulence of Vere, but at times Darrow proves itself to be entirely savage.]

It would be better warm.
