Grandma told me that people can have the same name, but I've never met another Jack before. That's really cool

Yeah, I guess we're Two Jacks. I have another name, too. Jack Newson. But I like calling us Two Jacks.

I think about his question, biting my lip.

I think I like magic. Magic was what brought me to Ma, and it's what brought me here. But maybe I don't like all magic. Because some people might use magic in a bad way.

Some people do, that's true.

This is good magic, though. You see this spoon? [ He doesn't know why this kid is here on his own, but Jack's grown pretty good at distracting and not just when he wants to steal wallets. He holds up a regular spoon that he's kept tucked in his sleeve, hiding the stem and the bent one from sight. ] I can bend it with my mind.

I laugh. Ma would probably think that's a bad kind of magic, because Ma doesn't like when things are bended or broken.

I've never seen someone bend a spoon with only their mind. Ma once bended a spoon because she left it on the fire too long, so it got all meltedy. But Meltedy Spoon was my favorite.

I look at the spoon real close.

Okay, show me the magic.

[ Jack grins, glad he's at a point where magic isn't just how he gets by. That it's something he loves to do. Carefully, he shifts the spoon so that the bent one replaces it, dropping the normal one into his sleeve seamlessly.

He holds out the bent spoon to little Jack to inspect. ]
