Jack, hey. You doing alright?

It's Michelle! I run to her and give her a hug, and I can feel my eyes growing wet. Grandma says it's normal to cry when you're happy, not only when you're sad, and I think that's what I'm doing now. I missed Michelle a lot.

I didn't know if I'd see you again. I'm doing great now.

I grin when I look up.

Did you stay here the whole time?

[panickedandran]

[ as soon as Jack runs up to her, she wraps her arms around him in turn, bending her knees a little to do so. she hadn't realized before just how much she missed him, or how good it would be to see him; now that he's here, she's something like relieved. ]

Not the whole time, but it's been a while now. I'm actually starting to get used to it.

So you're good, huh? I'm glad. It's really good to see you.

I almost reach out to touch Michelle's hair, but I remember, that's kind of rude unless you know someone always likes it — like Ma, Ma lets me do it all the time. It's something I have to ask to do.

It's good to see you, too. Things are okay. Better now that I can see my Darrow friends. Ma's still not home yet, she's in the hospital, but I've been making lots of friends at school so that I can make her proud. Grandma says she can be proud of me, even if she's busy in the hospital.

She definitely can still be proud of you from the hospital. I'm sure she is, too. I hope I get to meet her someday.

[ it would mean Jack had her here, for one, but he's a pretty incredible kid, and she knows how hard it can be to get away from circumstances like the ones they've been in. in light of all of that, of course she'd like to meet Jack's mom. ]

I hope so, too. I think she would like you a lot. And both of you have a lot of Strong, and maybe together, all of us can have more Strong. That's always good to have, in case things get hard.

I look up at the buildings. It makes me dizzy just trying to count all the windows.

Do you have a Home here now?

It is good to have, yeah. And I think you're right. We could have a lot more Strong together than by ourselves.

I do have a home. I have an apartment down by the beach. You can come see it, if you want.

By the beach? Wow! Grandma took me to a beach one time, and she told me that poo and pee don't actually to into the Ocean. Ma just told me that when we were in Room because she didn't want me to ask too much about Outside.

I wrinkle my nose. Sometimes I wish Ma told me the truth even when I was a baby. But I know she wanted to wait until I was big.

Yes, I would like to see your apartment, please.

I'm glad I remember my manners.

By the beach, yeah. It's not too far from here, so you'll be able to go back if you want to. It's really pretty, and there's a boardwalk right by it with all sorts of neat things to do.

[ she grins, then, reaching down to take Jack's hand. ]

Come on, I'll show you the apartment first. And, you know, if you wind up needing somewhere to stay while you're here, if your Ma or Grandma haven't turned up yet, I've got plenty of room. You'd be welcome to stay with me.
