[meme] Test Drive

Tag into this post with characters you're thinking of apping to the game (characters who are not currently in-game or currently reserved by someone else). It can be just a tag, a brief EP, a blurb about the character, a line of dialogue, or whatever you want. You can be new to the game, or simply want to test out a fresh pup. Tag each other with these characters or those already in game, and have fun.

Also, please include the name of their canon somewhere in or on the comment or on their profile page.

Witcher, witch-man, warlock. Somewhere between an occupation, a calling and a race. Hunt monsters, for pay.

Interesting. And you're a Witcher? Does that come with the sort of magical abilities you'd expect from a warlock? And what sorts of monsters do you hunt?

A witcher can use magic, if that's what you're asking. Small spells, that don't take much concentration and can be cast instantaneously. Could learn more, but it's not necessary to the job, and leaves one hand open for a sword.

The monster kind. Got two swords. Silver for magical creatures, vampires, wraiths, leshy. Steel for humans. But both kill monsters, if you take my meaning.

I do, yes. The magical creatures, is your determinism of their status of a monster based on what they are, or how they conduct themselves?

Met a necrophage once, Vetala. Found it was endowed with keen intelligence and the ability to speak. Could have killed it. Was a necrophage, after all. But we got to talking. And somehow, the bastard managed to rationally justify its way of life to me. So I let it go.

Answer your question?

It does, thank you. I've found people like to distill things down to basic black and white definitions, but everything has grey areas. I'm comforted to know you might speak to a dark creature (or attempt to) before striking them down out as a matter of course.

Have a friend, Dandelion, who claims I'm just full of scruples.

I prefer to think it's a matter of responsibility, plain honesty and professional ethics.

Or maybe I'm just too used to seeing hate.

Hate is unfortunately prevalent. Unfounded fear, as well. I'm no stranger to either.

I get it. Only thing people hate more than a witcher traveling through town is not having a witcher 'round to pay three silvers when they need a monster taken care of. Not much hiding, though.

[ a tilt of his head in the right direction shows that geralt's eyes are the amber of a cat's with vertical pupils, and reflect light, like an animal's. ]

[Remus blinks, surprised by the revelation considering what he’s been told about witchers.]

I should have guessed when you talked about trying to smell illness on me. But you assumed correctly; I’m not conventionally ill. I suspect we may be afflicted with similar conditions.

Sort of. I'm not what I suspect you are. They make us witchers. Take us as babies, raise us as part of a witcher school. When we're old enough, they feed us potions, mutagens. Call it the Trial of the Grasses. Come out the other end something different.

No transformation, though. Just what you see.

Ah. Are the mutations in order to give you enhanced strength and the like?

We do have one thing in common; neither of us were given a choice about what we were made to be. I was five years old when I was bitten.

Strength and speed, superior smell and night vision. How the magical mutations are put into use depends largely on which school a witcher comes out of. Mine was Wolf.

Shouldn't have happened to you. Too damn young. I was nine when the Trials started. Twelve when they finished. Had the eyes since then. Hair, too.

Is it terribly unpleasant, being the way you are? Were the mutations painful?

Mine is unavoidable. I don’t have a say when it happens; it’s driven by the moon cycle. There’s a potion I can take that makes it less difficult, but nothing stops it.
