I hope so, buddy. I'm not so sure sometimes, the bad guys are really strong. But we'll try. We'll always try.

That seems like some really heavy stuff. He smiles.

So, Jack. What's your favorite thing to do?

Bad guys can be strong, but that's why you get lots of good people together. When you work together, you can get the bad guy.

I can see that Party Poison looks a little tired. So maybe we shouldn't talk for so long. Maybe he needs more time, like Ma did.

Uhm... I like reading books a lot. And eating ice cream. But not so fast that my brain starts freezing.

Oh man, ice cream. I haven't had that in so long. Do you have a favorite flavor?

Talking about the bad guys where he's from is difficult. They've killed a lot of his friends, ruined a lot of things. Ice cream is way easier to discuss.

I have to think hard. I like almost all of the flavors, I think, except for the lemon ones because those are too sour.

I like chocolate a lot. And vanilla, because that was the first kind of ice cream I had. I tried a kind called birthday cake too, which was fun because it had sprinkles in it.

I look in my pocket for the money that Grandma keeps with me in case there's an emergency. I don't think she would be angry if I used it now. I think Party Poison would like something happy.

Maybe we can find a store can buy some ice cream. What's your favorite kind?

Oh man, birthday cake ice cream? That sounds awesome.

He smiles when Jack mentions getting some. The kid is really sweet, and Party's kind of glad he found him.

I think mint chocolate chip. It's been a long time though, I almost don't remember.

I really like talking to Party Poison. Even though his name is a little scary, he's not actually a scary person. I think he's probably tired from fighting the bad police all the time. I reach for his hand.

We can fix that. See, there's an ice cream shop across the street. Maybe you can get two scoops, so you can try birthday cake ice cream but also have your favorite kind. Birthday cake ice cream is really awesome, it has real pieces of cake in it.

He smiles and takes Jack's hand. He gives it a little squeeze, wanting to reassure the kid that he's alright.

That's really nice of you, Jack. How about you get me something and I'll get you something? Two scoops for you, too.

Sometimes in the desert he finds old money - maybe some of it is good here.

I think about the time when I wanted a second scoop of ice cream and Grandma said no, but then Leo told her that 'just the once wouldn't hurt.' I hope just twice won't hurt, either. I'll make sure to brush my teeth for longer when I'm done.

I like that, I think that's like what good friends do. You can share some of my scoops, too. If I pick different flavors, that means you can try four different things. Even more if you count the cone. I like the ones dipped in chocolate.

I get some more thoughts once we're close to the ice cream shop's door.

I hope the police here are okay. I don't think they make people take pills. But we can look out together, okay? Two people looking means we'll be two times as safe.

You have awesome ideas, Jack. I like the way you think.

Party pauses to hold the door open for Jack, then follows him in. He can smell the waffle cones and suddenly that seems like a super great idea.

How about this - if they're not okay, I'll keep you safe. I won't let anything bad happen to you, and you let me know if you see something I miss.

My tummy grumbles when we're inside. I haven't eaten anything since breakfast. Grandma said we could have lunch at the mall, but that was before I disappeared to Darrow.

I hope she's okay and not worrying too much about me.

I think we can keep each other safe. I can run real fast to get help, and I'm small and can fit small places. You're bigger and maybe have more Strong than me. But we can be a team.

It's a little scary to talk about this stuff. I used to think Old Nick was the only bad guy I would ever know. But I'm big now, and I know there are more bad guys in World. I want to stop them all.

Deal?

I hold my hand for a shake. (Leo taught me those.) My stomach rumbles a little, and I press down on it with my other hand, because this is important.

Deal. We'll be a team. Maybe we should come up with a nickname for you, like me.

He takes Jack's hand and shakes it. He was a brave kid, Party admired that a lot.

Alright, let 's get us some ice cream. You order first so I know how to do it.

Party Poison says maybe I can think of a nickname for myself. I don't know what kind of nickname I would pick. I like Jack a lot. Sometimes people call me Jacky Jack, but I think a nickname probably works best if it's not too much like your real name.

Okay! We have to wait in line first...

I stand as tall as I can as I walk up to the lady behind the freezer.

Can I get a double scoop? One rocky road and one strawberry. In a chocolate-dipped waffle cone, please. Thank you. And my friend.

I reach my hand out for Party so that he can order his ice cream.

Hey, can I get uh... a waffle cone with a scoop of mint chocolate chip and a scoop of birthday cake? Thanks.

Party grabs the cash out of his pocket to count it up. Oh yeah, he's solid for ice cream.

Want me to get both our treats? You're younger'n me, you should save your money.

I think about it, but only a little while before I shake my head.

I like your first idea. I like saving money, but it feels good to save money and then use it for a gift. If you buy my ice cream and I buy your ice cream, they're both gifts, and we'll both feel good.

I stand on tiptoe to get a better look at the price on the counter. I think the lady heard what we were saying, because the price is less than five dollars, and I think the last time I got ice cream for myself, it was about five dollars. I take out a five dollar bill from my wallet and push it gently to her.

Alright, deal.

Party added his cash to the counter, and he made sure whatever change there was went to Jack.

We don't really use this kind of money where I'm from, it's better if you keep it.

Well it was true, anyway. Cash ddn't get much anymore unless someone felt like bartering for some shiny coins or had a thing for dead presidents.
