I want to leave City as fast as possible and get back to Ma, but I remember what the nice people told me last time. City isn't a place you can leave from easily. There has to be some Magic to help. Until Magic comes, I can talk to some people if I'm careful. Mostly, I want to find Kate again.

There's a man who goes by two names. Some people I know have two names, like Ma, and Grandma and Grandpa. I only have one name, and it's the name I like best.

Are you called Captain Cold because you feel cold? I can borrow you my coat if it would make you warmer.

[Raises an eyebrow at the cute kid.]

Thanks, but they call me that because I make things cold.

I think making things cold is sometimes a bad thing. Like how Old Nick cut our power in Room. That made everything really cold, and Ma said he did it because he's a mean old man. But sometimes making things cold is a good thing, like when the Sun is too hot and you need to cool down. We used Tub for that in Room. In World, Leo says sometimes ice cream is good for that, but only a little bit.

How do you make things cold? Can... can you show me?

I almost forgot my manners.

[Shrugs.]

Sure, kid. But only 'cause you said please.

[Pulls out his cold gun and with a whine of energy fires it at a tree, encasing it in ice.]

I duck when I hear the noise, because it's scary, kind of like the noise before explosions. But then I see the tree, and it's like ice.

That's so cool!

I run to the tree, I slow down when I'm next to it. Careful, I reach my hand and touch the trunk. It's so cold! I think it's colder than Room when Old Nick cut the power.

Can anyone do it with that gun? Oh — thank you for showing me.

No problem, kid.

And yeah, anyone can do it but I ain't gonna recommend they try and take it from me. I'm... kind of attached to it.

I think about the things I don't want people to take from me. Tooth is one.

Did somebody important give it to you?

No. I stole it from somebody, actually. And he definitely wasn't important. I've met some pretty important people because of it though.

Stealing is bad. Even if you do it by accident. One time, Grandma was going to buy me a soccer ball, but she tried to take it out of Store before paying, and the alarm went off.

Maybe the guy I'm talking to is a bad guy. Or maybe he's between good and bad, like most people are.

I don't think it's good to steal. But it's good to have important people.

I look at my shoes. If he's not a good guy, maybe I shouldn't talk to him so much.

That's fine. You go through life believing that and see how that works out. I'll just be over here with all the nice things stealing gets me.

[Looks down at the kid after a moment.]

If it helps I also time travel and save the world from evil in my spare time.

I frown. I think he's using Sarcasm. Ma did that sometimes and I hated it.

Maybe stealing can get you nice things, but then that means the people you take them from don't have nice things anymore, and that's bad. If you need stuff like that, you can ask to borrow it. And you can tell people you'll use it to do good stuff. That would be better than just taking it.
