MEME: Soundtrack

This is a bit experimental, so please feel free to adapt this however works best for you! I know a lot of us have different soundtracks for each of our characters, and sometimes even songs we associate with them that don't make the cut just because they're hard to tag to for some reason. In the past, we've shared some of these songs with each other.

We also tend to have songs we associate with different pairings, friendships, and events, even specific threads or tags. So today I'd like us to tag in our characters, maybe with a little info on how you use music with that character (or not, your call). Then others can tag you with an event, thread, or relationship, so you can tell them what song or songs you associate with that, whether it's because of the lyrics or because you played it on a loop while threading or whatever your reason may be. OR tag each other volunteering that information. What does Darrow's soundtrack sound like to you?

Upbeat girly pop, obviously, break-up/revenge songs, and the Legally Blonde cast recording.

Dark, aggressive indie and folk, songs with an uncertain edge and dubious sanity, music for outsiders.

And "Hazard" by Richard Marx.

Rock, Rilo Kiley, faux-noir, and anything in the vein of what you can find on the show or movie soundtrack. New, grown-up Veronica has a lot of Natalia Kills on her playlist as well.

Olive Penderghast

More alt-flavored girly music, lots of indie pop like Anya Marina. She & Him, Lenka, and Little Boots. About equally split between upbeat "roll with the punches" type songs and softer, more wistful, sweet songs. Plus "Pocketful of Sunshine," obviously.

The Frozen soundtrack and score, with a couple of songs off people's fan mixes, lots of winter-themed music, and alternative girl music (the Indigo Girls, Tori Amos, Ingrid Michaelson), with some Florence and Coeur de Pirate's cover of "Ain't No Sunshine."

Grace Faraday

One of my favorite playlists, wow, wow. There's a wide range here. We've got a LOT of 1940s classics and wartime hits by Peggy Lee, Connie Francis, the Andrews Sisters, etc., Kay Kyster's "Wonder When My Baby's Coming Home," and so on, as well as Scott Bradlee and the Postmodern Jukebox's covers of modern hits like their '40s-style cover of Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It." Then, on the other hand, we've got Kesha, Lana Del Rey, the Pretty Reckless, Meiko, and Britney Spears, among others, with a couple Daughter tracks thrown in for pathos. So that's always a fun playlist.

Ophelia de Luce

Music is actually a huge aspect of Ophelia's character from her original canon. As a brilliant pianist, lot of the music on her playlist reflects her classical roots, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, etc. But she's also the kind of girl with more to her beneath the surface, so there's also Marina and the Diamonds, Bastille, and Noah & the Whale on her playlist.

Ooh, I've got Marina for Grace, too, which reminds me that I would love for her to meet Ophelia. I'm not really familiar with the canon, but from what you've written about and for her, I feel like they'd be an interesting match of shallow exterior and more complex interior.

Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica score is so fantastic that it's difficult to not just use it exclusively. Tracks with the Adama Family Theme in them get a lot of play, as well as every variation on Allegro, especially Violence and Variations from season 4. Muse's Black Holes and Revelations album is also heavily in rotation.

I'm some sort of artistically stunted moron that actually doesn't assign music to my characters. That is just way, way too much effort for me. Everyone once in a while a song will make me imagine a scene between a character or two but that's about it. If there's a theme song on a character's wiki it's because Di or Elissa were super kind enough to put it there when they made my pages pretty.

But, I suppose if you associate a song with one of mine, feel free to share?

A couple things for Kaine! For something uncharacteristically soft, I like "The Ballad of Love and Hate" by the Avett Brothers, which I actually found a fanmix for Alana. She'd be the Love side of it, but the anthropomorphized version of Hate in this feels right for Kaine for me (I promise that's not as awful as it might sound).

Placebo's cover of "Running Up That Hill" is a song I fall back on a lot, but that driving cold passion is something that feels right for Kaine to me.

- "The Passenger" by Stars
- "What New York Used to Be" by the Kills
- "Devil's Spoke" by Laura Marling: all of this can be broken, all of this can be broken / hold your devil by his spoke and spin him to ground

Kate Gregson

For a long time I didn't have a lot of songs I felt fit Kate. She talks about music she likes in canon, but none of it felt quite right to me until I started listening to Frank Turner and then everything felt perfect. Frank Turner used to play a lot of punk, but has moved into a slightly more mellow folk/punk/rock/idek combination. A lot of his songs now, too, are about growing up and being uncertain about becoming an adult and fucking up and making mistakes and trying to recover from them. Basically Kate's life.

And this song for Kate. THIS SONG. http://youtu.be/VXJoexZBMcA

FUCK YES GIVE ME MUSIC.

I really don't have set soundtracks for any of mine, just moods and genres, so I'd love specific tracks if any come to your sweet little mindgrapes.

Jason Todd would be anything loud, angry, and industrial.

Dean Winchester is kind of a cheat, since he has all of late 60s/70s rock already. The only modern band that fits him well in my head is Murder by Death.

For Will Graham, I discovered Southern Gothic rock works remarkably well, thanks to my secret Santa! Otherwise, dark, moody, creepy music works very well for him.

For Aramis......holy crap I don't know. Any songs about brotherhood would work thematically, but as for actual musical genre...I'd probably stick to classical and instrumental with him.

For Jim Kirk, his score already works so well, but any exciting, upbeat songs and/or dreamy spacerock (like Woodkid) would work well :E

Jessica Drew backslash Spider-Woman

For the other game I play her in, I have Hitten as her theme song, and made the very deliberate choice to change it for Darrow to Help I'm Alive. Not just to not be doing the same thing! Because I'm going for a different atmosphere. Not as soft, more pressured. She has powers, she has responsibilities, she has a crusade, and Help I'm Alive ties more into that. It has more of a drive to it, a different beat.

to get all Noh-Varr on it, listen to the drums da-da-DAdada da-da-DAdada da-da-DAdada can you hear my heart BEATING LIKE A HAMMER

So there's that. Her playlist is so eclectic it's kind of useless for specific purposes so I'm considered building a pair of smaller playlists, one for general talky/emotions threads -- your Florences, your Cat Powers, stuff like that, maybe, although I'm not entirely sure of it -- and one for action. Foo Fighters, The Kills. "Problem" by Natalia Kills which isn't lyrically apt but always make me think of her beating down a whole building full of dudes without breaking strut and then going dancing, so. GOOD MOOD.
