"Stop being such a baby and just stick it in, Kaine," Lily said with a huff, blowing a strand of hair out of her face.

"I will, stop trying to rush me," he grumbled. He glared at her, but she was completely unfazed by it. It was an annoying and admirable trait all at the same time.

"Look, I know I only asked you to do this because I had a little bit to drink and it seemed like a good idea at the time, and you're doing it at a favor because I'm really hard up but... man the fuck up Kaine and do it."

He glared at her even more intensely but she just looked even less impressed. She had already gotten him to take off his pants, he thought he should get some credit for that.

"Don't you have people for this?" he asked.

"Yes. But they all got sick," she said with a nod.

"All of them?"

"All of them. Please, as a favor to me? Besides, how is this all that different than what you do with Cass?"

"Fine, fine!" he relented. Sighing, he stuck his foot into the leotard and pulled it all the way up. "For the record, my tights are less flimsy."

"Stop being a baby. You've seen the show enough times and after this rehearsal you'll have the basics down well enough. It's just a background part."

She was right, he knew it, but he didn't have to like it. "Just so long as this doesn't get to be a regular thing."

There's a knock at the door, and Jesse almost doesn't want to answer it.

Even so, he only opens the door a crack, looking down at Clementine standing there.

"Hi," she says, and Jesse can already feel his stomach twist up, "We were supposed to go to the park after school. It's okay if you forgot."

"Yeah, uh, sorry," Jesse says, and he scratches at his beard, looking down at his sneakers for a second, "There was, uh... there was this thing I had to do. Maybe some other time, okay?"

"Okay," Clementine says, and she rocks back on her heels, not as upset as Jesse thought she'd be. Usually he doesn't miss this kind of stuff. He says he's gonna be there, and he shows up.

Maybe it's different now.

"Andrea made dinner and she said you could come over if you want," Clementine goes on to say.

"Look, can you--" Jesse starts, then cuts himself off, "Some other time. I'm kinda busy."

"Oh. Okay," she says, and this time there's disappointment there. Jesse shuts his eyes, and when that's not enough, when he can still feel her looking at him from underneath the brim of her cap, he shuts the door. The sliver of light from the hallway gone, he walks back into the dark of the living room.


"Did you get rid of her?"

"Yeah, whatever, man," Jesse says, "Are we gonna get this cook going or what?"

"Dude!" Jesse shouted over the wind howling in his ears. "I had no idea you knew how to drive a scooter. Or that they could go so fast!"

The excessive speed (at least excessive for a scooter) was probably due to the fact that they were going downhill. Or maybe it was urged on by the sheer will of the two young men riding it; praying, hoping, and wishing that it had enough power to outrun the flashing blue lights behind them.

Since the flashing lights were connected to a 15 speed bicycle, their chances of escape were a lot better than they could have been if it were a Crown Vic chasing them.

Glancing over his shoulder, Jesse also noticed that the bike cop has a really large gut for a guy that spends his days riding a bike around. Maybe he just circled the Dunkin' Donuts or something.

"I think I smoked some of the same weed Lance Livestrong uses, mate," Chris shouted back, the glee that only comes from a drug induced detachment from reality evident in his voice. "Because I actually have no idea how to drive this fuckin' thing!"

"I don't think that's the type of drugs people accuse him of being on, it's- you know what, forget it," Jesse said. He could argue Lance didn't due weed, Chris would reply that the guy had balls cancer so of course he did weed, and then they would crash and die because they weren't focused on where they were going. Better to just roll with it.

"Hey, do you see that," Jesse said, pointing over Chris's shoulder. "I think we can-"

"On it," Chris said with a nod, veering the scooter down a side road.

"Where the hell are you going! That's to the pier! I was pointing to the- oh shit you're headed toward the water!" Jesse shouted.

"Fuckin' relax, man, I've done this before. Into the water and we'll ditch him for sure."

"I could just run it down and strangle it to death," I whisper to her.

"Shut up or I'll shoot you."

I shut up. I know an empty threat when I hear one, and that was not an empty threat.

I watch how she holds her bow and I try to mimic the action, remembering what she taught me. I know from experience though that I'm doing something wrong. I'm always doing something wrong.

"Exhale and release she says."

I do what she says, just like she tells me to. The shot goes wide. Very wide. The deer spooks as my arrow crashes through the branches but Katniss gets a shot off. Of course it's perfect and the deer goes down.

"You're awful," she tells me, lowering the bow. As if I needed the confirmation, seeing as how I would have missed an entire herd of deer. Assuming deer hang out in herds.

"Go get it. Bring it back to the farm."

I'm about to complain but she's already heading back to the farm. Besides, I did ask her to teach me, so I guess I have to do what she says. Not that her teaching has done any good so far, but I think that's on me.

"Also, don't come back without your arrow," she adds.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" I call out. "It's in the forest somewhere. It looks just like a fucking stick. In the forest!"

"Then you shouldn't have missed."

Fuck.

I know it's a one way trip. I know I've only got one shot at this. I don't care. Part of me knows that it's completely selfish of me too, that I'd do it even if there wasn't any other purpose for it except to save myself.

But I also have to admit that even if it didn't, even if it fixed nothing about what I am, about what I've done, I'd do it for her. Because she's worth saving. Maybe some other heroes wouldn't want to mess up the timeline or some shit like that. Me? I don't care. That's why I'm not a hero.

I'm already moving when the portal opens. It's a leap of faith and I have to assume that everyone has done their jobs right and I'm going to be in the right place at the right time.

I don't understand the science of it, but they tell me that I've got 15, maybe 20 seconds max before the time stream realizes I shouldn't be there and kicks me out.

Almost as soon as I'm through, I make contact with something and it's her, I can tell it's her. Call it Spider-Sense or whatever, but I know it is. I instantly curl around her and throw out a webline. Because of her speed, I can't slow down much if I don't want to risk hurting her. Can't make the same mistake Peter did.

I slam into the side of the bridge and cry out in pain before dropping to the ground, landing on the base of the pillar just above the water. My skull is cracked, but I feel Gwen shifting in my arms.

"Who, who are you?!"

I give a small smile, because I've done it. I've saved her. Gwen is going to live. I don't care if that means I'll probably cease to exist, it's worth it. All the deaths I've caused, all the joy Gwen would never experience... all fixed.

"Doesn't matter," I say, smiling at her from behind my mask. I can already feel myself being pulled apart. I don't know if that's the timeline rejecting my presence or reality removing me from existence. I don't know which one I'm hoping for.

"You'll never have to know me," I add, closing my eyes and relaxing as I feel whatever it is that's dissipating me just have its way with me.
