Secret Santa Day One

On the first day of Chrismukkah, your Secret Santa gives to thee... I don't know. Let's find out.

Each day from now through Christmas, you'll find a post like this one waiting. Leave anonymous comments with your gift for your Secret Santee (make sure to put his or her name in the subject line so they can find it!). Remember, it's okay if you don't have something every day. We do, however, encourage you to leave a little note to let them know they haven't been forgotten. Christmas Day will be a free-for-all, where you can leave presents for anyone at all and, if you so desire, reveal your identity.

Aww, thank you, Santa, you know me so well. Nothing brightens a girl's day like a cute blonde crying over a sloth. :3

This is mostly a placeholder! While Santa hopes to get today's gift up today, some things must be played by ear. Either way, this Santa loves you dearly and is not particularly worried if she's found out. Here, a message of my devotion:

I'm going to try and remain anonymous for as long as possible, but I'm sure you'll quickly figure out exactly who I am. For the first couple of days, I'm gonna be doing this one character at a time, starting with:

LILY

I already loved the pictures you were using on the wiki for her, but since you'd asked for graphics and things, I used my very limited skills to make these two. I think the smaller one is kind of interesting, because you can see her tattoo. Anyway, they should fit on her page, and within your table.

KUDOS:

Now, Lily is a character that is very dear to my heart, so it's a little difficult for me to praise her without giving myself away. With a movie like Black Swan, with such an unreliable narrator, a lot of what we see of Lily is ambiguous, left up to interpretation. We don't necessarily see the real Lily. What you've managed to do with her, the direction you've taken her, falls perfectly in line with what I saw in the film. But beyond that, you've made her feel extremely real, when it would've been easy to make her a caricature, when it would've been easy to make her more vindictive and manipulative than I believe she really is, because that's the way Nina saw her. She's charming and compelling, exactly the way she should be. A warm little center that people are drawn to. I love reading her threads, I love playing with her, and I'm only sad that I don't have more excuses to do it.

So oh my god you will soon see how pointless the anon thing is but one must keep up appearances.

Today I have for you some KUDOS for one character that has come to mean a lot to me.

Babydoll

It took me a long time to see Sucker Punch and of course I'd heard all kinds of things about it, about how goofy and even bad and how problematic it was, so imagine my surprise when - while I'd own the problematic bits - I ended up loving it and loving Babydoll in particular. However, I did end up wanting deeper characterization, mostly because I just loved the characters that much, so when I saw you were bringing her in I was excited to see what might be done with her.

And God, have I not been in the least disappointed.

One of the great things about her in the movie - for Darrow purposes - is how there's a clear skeleton of a character and a lot of deeper traits but so much hinted at and never played out as richly as it could be. You've done that, and then some. The way you play her, she really feels like a whole, real person, even more than in her canon. It's been wonderful to watch her working through finding her trust with people, grappling with her fears, trying to confront what her power means and how she might use it, and trying to discover her place in a world that's frequently baffling and sometimes frightening. She's a perfect mix of weakness and strength, each an equally important part of a complex whole.

I once read something about how what feminists want in fiction isn't "strong female characters" as "female characters who are uniformly strong", but "strong characters, female" - in other words, complex female characters with conflicts and weaknesses and determination and fear and all the things that make people interesting and compelling. And it's so fascinating to me that you've brought that out of a character from a canon that a lot of people would say is anything but that. That's a mark of a truly skilled writer.

Your secret santa is coming in under the east coast wire on the first day of giving with some kudos!

Maybe I'm giving myself away a bit by saying that I've had the distinct pleasure of playing off of your Saffron in two games now. I've gotten to watch Saffron grow over the years from the character she was in canon to the one she is now, and it's been amazing. She was always such an intriguing character on Firefly, and I think that if the show had been given more than one season, that we would have gained even more of an insight into what makes her tick.

In particular, some of the things I adore reading are her relationships with other pups, especially the ones she's known from other games. While there are still glimpses of that hard, false exterior she put on for the crew of Serenity, she cares about her friends, which is something we only got to briefly see in Trash. It's great to be able to actually see her make connections that she couldn't have in canon (or maybe she did and you've just been reading Joss Whedon's mind all these years! I wouldn't be surprised!) and she's an absolute joy to be able to thread off of. I also really enjoyed her stint in Silent Darrow with Russell and Kaine, because even though she can be kind of a softie, she's still a bad ass, and that's always awesome to read. :D

Mostly I'm just rambling at this point, but suffice it to say, I love HelYoSaffBride and can't wait to read even more of her. ♥ ♥ ♥

Eeeee, thank you so much, Santa! I always am thrilled to hear when people enjoy reading and threading with Saffron, I try really hard to show how...complicated she actually is and it's nice to know that shows in some way. And such a gorgeous picture (though really, is it possible for Christina to not be gorgeous in a picture?)
