[he cocked his head, nose twitching at the smell of smoke. He thought better of his answer and continued:]

[ She is herself a walking corpse, of a sort, and before her stands what appears to be another, if not for the patchwork scarring across his features. She cannot sense that he is like her, but that doesn't need to matter. What she can sense is that he doesn't seem to be a threat. Her voice is accented by her Eastern European heritage when she speaks. ]

He looked down at his hands, recalling the moment he'd crawled upon an unknown shore, when awareness first came to him. His arrival in this place was no more or less shocking.

She knows he isn't — couldn't be — for one, Fiyero wouldn't have worn those glasses for anything in Oz, never mind the rest of the outfit and the giveaway voice — but the resemblance is uncannified, and the wound is still so raw.
