And yes, mine is very different. I changed it as a tribute to a professor who— [ She waves one hand dismissively, stopping short of saying it doesn't matter but effectively not dwelling on it anyway. ] That's also a long story.

[slightly sing-song and dreamy, smirking] You’re the wrong one, though, aren’t you? Too young to be Glinda. Much, much too young and… [considers] …uncertain.

[All at once her tone and expression sobers: inspecting the girl with a raised eyebrow.]

But you do have choices to make, don’t you …and a Wizard watching them. Let me give you a word of advice, then, little sister: there’s no time to be pleasing.

The wrong one of what? I'll have you know, I am who I've always been. Aside from the name change, that is, but I don't see how one little letter could make that kind of a difference.

[ The irony of this statement — that she was once the one harping quite insistently on the first a in Galinda — is entirely lost on her. In fairness, though, she's distracted, brittle and defensive and trying not to seem like she is under the weight of too much scrutiny. She may thrive on being seen, but she doesn't know what to do with being read so easily, and she doesn't think she likes it. ]

Who are you, anyway? I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage — you know me, but I don't know you.

[ Not one single piece of that means anything to her, but it doesn't matter. It's the best thing she's heard so far today. She leans forward, bright-eyed and eager, almost gossipy. ]

Say more right now.

Well you're basically famous where I'm from! Which is Ireland, by the way, but you won't have heard of it, will you? You're from Oz, right?

I only know the story of how you helped a girl and her dog stop the witch of the west. Your crown was beautiful.

I am! One hundred percent Ozian. And, no, I haven't ever heard of Ireland, but I'm sure it's a lovely place. After all, they clearly have good taste, right?

[ She grins, half-teasing, and gives a toss of her hair. ]

I don't know about any girls and their dogs, either. But I do like the sound of that.

[ Does she? Something about those words in that order quietly unsettles her, makes her wonder just who she was helping to stop. She doesn't want to think about it now, though. This is very much not the time, and it wouldn't do a bit of good. ]

[ Saoirse's eyes go big and she covers her mouth with both brightly nail-polished hands. ]

Oh no, did I just accidentally tell you your future? I didn't mean to spoil it for you! It's only that I'm so excited to meet you!

Do not worry about it even the teensiest bit. And now I know what to look out for, right?

[ Delighted, she reaches for one of the girl's hands to get a better look at her fingernails. ]

I love these. Did you do them yourself?

[ Oh my god, Glinda loves her nails. Saoirse looks awed and delighted at once. These ones are gingerbread themed, that soft, orangey brown with white icing and a little gingerbread man on her middle fingernail. ]

I did! I do nails. On video, I mean, it's kind of a job. I mean, it's a hobby, but if I get enough followers and views, I can get paid for it.

[ Followers and views. Glinda has never heard of a job that involves doing nails on video, but this girl definitely has the right idea. ]

You and me? We're going to be friends.

Which reminds me, you know my name, but I don't know yours.

[ Saoirse definitely doesn't blush, but she does giggle shyly. At the reminder that she hasn't introduced herself, she widens her eyes guiltily. ]

Oh! Sorry about that. I'm Saoirse. Saoirse Baker. And this is Darrow, if you didn't know.

Saoirse! What a lovely name. It is so nice to meet you.

And, no, I didn't, actually. I've never heard of a Darrow before.

It's sort of a magic city. It picks people and brings them here. I used to think maybe it was lonely.

Not the picking people up and bringing them here, obviously, I do have things I meant to be doing right about now. But looking at it that way.

If the 'Ga' is silent, wouldn't that just make you 'Linda'?

[ She probably gets that joke a lot, but Rose can't resist poking a bit. Maybe it's all the pink. Her own outfit is a more timeless jeans and light flannel combo, though it's currently topped by a borrowed hoodie that's several sizes too large and sports a Barton University logo across the back.

Now she just needs to find a burger joint. And someone willing to buy her a burger. Not that this person's whole aesthetic screams 'burger enjoyer,' but again, it's too weird for Rose to just let her pass by, wholly unremarked upon. ]

[ Glinda draws in a breath, opens her mouth as if to speak, then pauses for a prolonged moment, her expression somewhere between surprised and confused. It's very clear that this idea has never occurred to her at all. It seems worth entertaining, too — at the very least, it would be simpler, and no one would be stuttering over it again — but then that thought reminds her of why she decided to change it in the first place, and she dismisses it. ]

Theoretifically, yes, it would, but... Well, it's a long story. You see, I had this professor who was always saying it wrong. Glinda instead of Ga-linda. One thing led to another, and eventually, it stuck.

[ Rose would be the first to admit that she's not keeping up with evolving young-person slang, but she does betray a flicker of a frown at 'theoretifically.' Is that what people are saying these days? This is why she prefers talking to truckers.

Aside from that — well, and also aside from what a wild swing of a name 'Galinda' is in the first place — the explanation is easy enough to follow. ]

Yeah, that makes sense. I mean — and not to be rude or anything — but if your parents were going to name you something that close to 'Glinda' of good witch fame in the first place, they might as well have cut the extra syllable themselves and denied every wise-ass you'd ever meet the satisfaction.
