Initially, John mistakes the girl for Saoirse, as much because he can't imagine any other child about that size striding into the Archive with any confidence as because of the superficial resemblance. But upon second look, it's clear that he's never seen this one before. He frowns, straightening from his hunch and distantly wishing that Martin was the one covering the front today.

"Are you lost?" he asks, endeavoring not to sound unkind, though he can't help some bewilderment leaking into his tone.

Walking in and looking around with all the confidence of someone who knows exactly where they're going and what they're doing, Hilde nevertheless isn't expecting such a greeting. In retrospect, though, it makes sense. Most people don't expect a ten-year-old to go wandering around alone anyway, especially not in a place like this.

In her experience, though, she's not like most ten-year-olds, and she is here for a reason, of sorts. "No, I'm not lost," she answers, her voice light, a little curious. "I heard about this place. You keep records here?"

"Ah." It's not entirely illuminating, as questions go: if she was an adult, John would presume she'd been directed here by City Hall, and it's a little bit harder to imagine a child going to such lengths for information. But it's not impossible to imagine. Honestly, it sounds a little like the sort of thing he might have eventually poked his nose into, if his temporal regression had lasted longer and he hadn't been introduced to the Archive so quickly.

"We do, yes. Immigration files, mostly, on behalf of the city." Her accent could be local, but her behavior decidedly isn't, so he adds, "Did you want to see your file?"

The boy is small for his age, short and slight and looking more like six than eight or nine. He carries himself close and wary, but his eyes are friendly when he sees the girl.

"Hello," he greets, polite as you please, and even offers his hand. "I'm Cody."

Aimee doesn't exactly remember coming here. She's quite sure, actually, she was driving to school. But this definitely isn't Moordale. She doesn't recognize the street signs, for one. And it's too... flat.

She's also driving straight at an oncoming car.

With a squeak, Aimee stands on the brakes and stares at the car ahead of her. The driver is on the wrong side of their car, punching their car horn and probably yelling and swearing at her, too, by the look of things. She rolls her window down and leans out.

"Sorry!" she calls. She shifts the car into reverse, and she backs up and against the sidewalk. The car jostles a bit as the tire bumps the curb, but she's going slow enough that she doesn't drive up onto it. Once she's parked, she unfastens her seat belt and slides out of the car.

"Sorry!" she calls again when the driver waves their middle finger at her on their way by.

The familiar voice has Maeve turning on her heel in the middle of the sidewalk, ignoring the disgruntled complaints of everyone whose way she's in. It's been over a year now, a year alone in this place, though not really alone, but alone enough.

Alone without Aimee.

"Aimes?" she calls, tentative, like this is all going to turn out to be just a fiction. "Aimee?"

"Maeve!" Aimee turns at the voice, relieved for something familiar to latch onto. She gestures vaguely at the road and shakes her head, like it's all the weirdest thing she's ever seen. "How'd you get out here? I was on my way to pick you up!" She's wearing her Moordale uniform, and she realizes a bit suddenly that Maeve's not. She looks her up and down, frowning a bit. "Wait, is it Saturday?"

"No, Aimes, it isn't Saturday," Maeve answers, stepping through a few more people so she can wrap Aimee up in a hug. Trust her best friend to drive straight into Darrow without even realizing something has happened and Maeve laughs as she squeezes Aimee tighter, knowing she's probably freaking her out a little and unable to care.

It's been over a year and this feels so good.

Aimee leans into the hug, hooking her chin over Maeve's shoulder.

"I've got to tell you something, love," she says as she leans back. She looks at Maeve seriously, eyebrows ticked into a worried arc. "I don't think this is Moordale." Then, like she knows Maeve will think she's crazy, she gestures back towards the street. "D'you see how they're all driving on the wrong sides? One of 'em almost drove right into me!"

Maeve can't help but laugh again, even as she shakes her head and she reaches up, brushing back some of Aimee's hair. "No, it isn't Moordale," she agrees. "Come on, I have a lot to tell you and you might want to sit down first."

She can see Aimee accepting this, she can see her finding a place in Darrow without much work, because Aimee is Aimee. People love her no matter where she goes. Maeve worries about her some of the time, but she never worries that Aimee won't have someone to help her, because that's just who Aimee is.
