She's back again. Her house is gone. Her family is gone. Edgar's gone. It's just her, in this impossible city. It has to be some kind of afterlife. There are so many people, here, and none of them make sense. But she can move around freely. She isn't trapped in her own yard, or walled off by impenetrable fog. Is this what it looks like? Heaven, or whatever it's called?

She's got her Souxsie and the Banshees shirt on, as usual. She hasn't changed her clothes since she died. She hasn't thought to try, honestly. Sometimes, she thinks, if she'd known she was going to die that night, she might've worn something different to bed.

Lisa hugs herself as she walks down the street. She doesn't feel the chill in the air that other people seem to feel. She's a ghost. She doesn't feel temperature, anymore. Not since she's been Awake. Up ahead, it starts to get crowded, and she tries not to panic. They can't touch her. She doesn't know if she'll jump into them like she does Olivia. If they're alive, then she will, she's certain of it. And if she does, how does she get out again?

The best shot is to just avoid the chances altogether. She has no way of knowing if they're fellow ghosts or living humans. She turns on her heels to walk in the other direction—

And slams right into someone.

Not into them, not like Olivia. She bumps into them like she might bump into Robbie, and bounces off of them again. She gasps and takes a couple steps back, then looks down at herself. She... she's still her. She didn't jump into them.

"Oh," she says, looking at the person. "I'm... sorry."

"Christ—" John grits out before he can stop himself, stumbling back a pace and reflexively clutching the strap of his bag. He's a swift walker (when he's not matching his pace to Martin's, that is), and hadn't had nearly enough time to course correct when the person in front of him did an abrupt about-face.

Of course, once he realizes said person is a young woman — and clocks the stunned look she's giving him — he feels like a bit of a prick. There's nothing he can do about his height or his scars, but he might at least endeavor not to act like a creep.

"No, it-it's fine," he insists, relaxing his shoulders with conscious effort. "Are you okay?"

Beginners

In the park, with a coffee cup in one hand, a cruller in the other, a small warm dog against his arm and a sketchbook spread on his knees, Oliver watches the people who pass by. They all seem so normal, going to and from jobs, homes, lives, lovers, families. This place is anything but normal, he knows, but the people are still people, still just living as best they can.

He bites into his cruller as Arthur looks up at him.

"You know I can't do anything about it, right?" he asks Arthur after he's chewed and swallowed. "If I could, I would. This place isn't all bad, though. We have somewhere to live, you know the layout. You just need to get out more. Meet other dogs. We've talked about this, I can't be your only companion."

The same could be said for you. Arthur tilts his head, holding Oliver's gaze for a moment.

Oliver sighs and strokes Arthur's head, then sips his coffee.

"I guess," he agrees. "But it's easier this way."

"Easier what way?"

The girl stops beside him, thinking at first that he'd been talking to her. Her pink hair and the slightly pinker-than-normal tinge to her skin is probably pretty weird, but Kipo hadn't ever really had a reason to think about it before.

The guy's dog is small — the smallest Kipo thinks she's ever seen — and she crouches to look at it with a huge grin.

"Awww, look at your dog!" she coos. "Hey little guy!"

He is trying, though it is proving very difficult and even troublesome, to blend in. One less optimistic might even say the task extends past difficult into the impossible. His clothes set him apart at once, ragged as they are, tattered and rotting with seawater, any color they once had long since faded to a dull, drained grey. He has seen more than one person's eyes stray to the shells and other adornments in his hair with some curiosity, and has concluded it is not always a complimentary sort. But he tries nevertheless, to wander this strange, wide open world, so devoid of Halls and Statues but so thick and thriving with Life, with some sort of intention. As though he knows where he is going, or anything about this place at all. As though he is not desperately clinging to his own last scraps of dignity that keep him from collapsing into a quivering, terrified wreck.

So when he sees a man who looks a little lost and a little disordered, it is almost a comfort, as though perhaps he is not so alone. So he strides up, affecting all the confidence he can muster, and says pleasantly, "Hello!"

He hasn't quite thought of anything else to say yet.

It's nicer than the last couple of times she's been here, Lari realizes as she walks down the street. She sheds her coat — faux fur, thank you very much, she does not condone the killing of innocent animals — and drapes it over her arm as she walks, enjoying the fresh, early-Spring breeze. It's not as crisp as autumn, but not as biting as winter, and she smiles to herself — it's not as suffocating as England.

Every time she finds herself here, she hopes it's permanent. She loves Johnny, of course she does, but she can't stay there. His mother is an emotional leech, feeding on Larita's life the longer she's there, and sooner than later, something will give. Lari just hopes it isn't her.

"Oh!" she says to the next person walking by. "Forgive me, I'm still quite new here, but might you direct me to the nearest bar? I could use something a little stronger than a walk, lovely though it is."

Martin startles slightly as passing woman raises her voice to him; people don't usually stop him for any reason, much less anyone so... well, glamorous. He'd noted her in his periphery but had already subconsciously ruled her out as anyone who'd have anything to do with him.

But her question puts some of that in perspective, even if he takes a moment to recover himself, stammering slightly. Belatedly he recognizes that her particular style of glamour, such as it is, is rather old-fashioned — and that's as much a dead giveaway as is the word 'new.' Belatedly, he feels a bit stupid for not considering that when he first saw her.

"Oh," he says. "Erm..." He looks around, but he's not terribly familiar with this part of town. Which is perhaps beside the point. "I'm not sure, but I'm—I'm also not sure anything would be open right now? It's like... noon."

Which isn't very helpful or friendly. He's never going to be good at this.

"Are y—how new are you?" he tries again.

Oh — and here he is again. He'd nearly let himself think it a bad dream. He doesn't quite remember waking, only the dream that perhaps was real, and he has the strange notion that he's somehow just slipped from one dream directly into another. Which is itself the same dream.

At least, he thinks so.

The World continues to be loud and bright and vast and overwhelming, but at this time he allows himself to look at it a little more, tentative and shaky-limbed, but ever curious as a scientist must be.

He sees someone — another person! Another human! And he lifts his hand to wave or to beckon, unable to decide which, extending his hand in a half-formed mixture of both. "Hello!" he calls, and flinches slightly at the sound of his own voice, which seems to dissipate so strangely without the comforting embrace of smooth, protective Marble. "Hello, who are you?"

The human he'd waved to seems to have no interest in talking to him, which just strikes Vetra as rude. She shakes her head and puts her omnitool away, then steps towards him.

"Try not to take it personally," she says. "Most people can be jerks, doesn't matter what race they are." She offers a smile as she takes in his appearance. He looks like an Exile, his clothes tattered and his hair decorated with bits of whatever he's found along the way. It makes sense, and as much as Vetra thinks he deserves better, she's not going to pity him for making the best of his hand.

Considering the circumstances, it is a relief to see Mr Strange again. There is no small comfort to be had by finding a familiar face within these strange Lands, and besides that, there was a conversation they had left unfinished.

"Excuse me!" he says as he draws near. "I am sorry, I did not mean to ignore your question so long." Though he is not entirely certain how long it has been. "I feel almost as if we had just been speaking, only that surely cannot be true. Perhaps I fell asleep? That would have been quite rude of me. In any case, if you are still curious to know of my Halls, I would be happy to tell you about them. Mapping and describing them was a monumental task I had taken on, and to share that work would be a great joy."

He has not forgotten the rest of what Strange said, regarding English and the distressing notion of forgetting one's homeland. While he does believe Mr Strange to be a bit confused, claiming him to be an 'Englishman' who might be 'under a spell,' he cannot so readily dismiss his own anxiety at the idea of forgetting his home. Thus it is quite eagerly that he offers to describe it all, as if to reinforce the veritable strength of his memory.
