[He doesn’t say her name. He doesn’t know what alias she’s currently using, or if Lucien’s people are around. Or Alistair’s, come to think of it. This seems like an isolated enough place, but one never knows who’s watching.]

“As I told Jamie, sorry for ruining your holiday.”

[Charlotte tosses off her blonde wig, discarding her fashion vlogger disguise with as much ease as if she were throwing away a tampon. All the while she tells herself that she can't feel anything; she doesn't even cry.

But she can't contain the crack in her voice, all the same.]

In my defense, spending the last year recovering under Phillipa’s supervision didn’t exactly prepare me for this. So, yes, that is the best I’ve got.

[August tells himself he isn’t angry—at least, not at Charlotte. Or, rather, not any more angry at Charlotte than he is at Lucien or Hadrian or Milo or Alistair.]
