It's fine. Scott and his Mom let me have a room at their place, so I'm safe. I'm sure you had some reason to do it, but you were kind of everything I had left after what happened to Erica and Boyd. I mean, outside of Scott, obviously.

I turned twenty-eight two months ago. I was brought here after we took care of the kanima and that's the last thing I remember. For me, it's been five years.

No one's ever really looked at me long enough to notice my hair, honestly, but I got my mother's curls. She always had really beautiful hair.
Is that the only thing people get judged on here? Their hair?

[She snorts] Hardly. This place judges a person same as anywhere you're likely to be from, child or adult, rich and poor, criminal or law-abiding, but then it's easier to come by money here, too. It's not too bad a place, really. Gives you a place to stay, when you show up. Not much choice about where, but s'allright.
But it sends people home same as it takes them, and you might never see them again, so what matter is it if I tell you you've nice hair? I don't know you from Adam.

Most people back there judged you about how normal your life looked, or how popular you were or money you had. I didn't really do so well with those things.
