"I-- I think?"

I stare at my hands, covered in blood and sand, and my tunic, torn and wet with blood. But I can feel my heart beating yet in my chest when surely it should not.

"I am," I decide.

I am. I live. I live.

"Achilles!" I shout, and try to scramble to my feet. But like a newborn foal in shock and surprise at his own life, my legs shake and fold up under me as I fall.

"Yell all you like, I have not had calls answered by voices I know," he says, watching the young man stumble like a fawn. He does not bother to get to his feet.

"Achilles?" he echoes. "You are Greek?"

I still, instantly wary. I am not dead yet, but my stupid mouth might make it so yet.

"Do you fight for Troy?"

"Troy?" he chuckles. "A city lost to the conquest of Rome, as many have fallen before it. I fight upon the sands of the arena, no longer the battlefield."

"Rome?" I do not know the king, the kingdom, though the name does not sound all that strange on my tongue. If they have not counted themselves among the supporters of Agamemnon, then they are either cowardly or sly.

"What arena? Where am I? I have to get back to Achilles."
