In some ways, he's regressed - going back to that private, hiding feelings place he was in for a really time. In other ways, he recognizes this and is trying really hard not to fall back into that pattern. He knows it's not good for him and that he can't just hide from the world - especially now with no handlers or protectors to do things for him. It's hard for him but he's really trying.
Ideally, I want him to eventually come to peace with himself, come to understand that he can have a life with a purpose beyond just playing chess and that this won't destroy his genius.
