Where Julie and Maddie are certainly the twin protagonists of Code Name Verity, and Julie the undeniable central character in The Pearl Thief, Jamie Beaufort-Stuart is criminally underappreciated.
If not for the war, Jamie might've ended up a civil engineer or some other expert dealing with irrigation and plumbing. With the war? Jamie became a pilot. Even after his plane went down and he lost his co-pilot, along with his toes and several of his fingers to frostbite, Jamie leapt at the chance to get back into the skies. With a recommendation from Maddie (along with the name of a certain intelligence agent who would do the official recruitment) he became a pilot for the SOE and was absolutely brilliant.
Jamie's an absolute sweetheart. When he'd thought himself grounded for the rest of the war, he threw himself into watching over a whole pack of little boys at Castle Craig and ensuring that they were well-fed and cared for. And when he flew behind enemy lines to retrieve Maddie and his sister, he nearly ended up brawling with a Resistance agent about twice his size because the man decided to disrespect a woman in front of him.
It's really no wonder Maddie fell in love with him and marries him before the war's over.
